Kellogg Foundation Combats ‘Schoolhouse To Jailhouse’ Pipeline, Donates $4.7 Million To Organizations For Young Black Men

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation is donating millions of dollars to coalitions and organizations in Mississippi and New Orleans to boost educational and employment opportunities for boys and young men of color. Mississippi was targeted for its devastatingly low graduation rates for men of color—51 percent for Black men. The programs will offer resources and opportunities for economic and educational advancement and political engagement as well as provide internships in an array of fields like media and the culinary arts. Senate Votes On Defunding Planned Parenthood

Senate Agriculture Holds Hearings On Bird Flu And Its Influence On U.S. Poultry Sector

After videos accusing Planned Parenthood of illegally profiting from fetal tissue went viral, senators are voting today on whether to block the family planning organization’s federal funding to distribute to alternative health providers instead. Planned Parenthood says that cutting federal funding won’t impact the abortions it provides—most recently 328,000 in a year out of 1 million total in the U.S. Federal money can’t fund abortions unless it is a procedure being provided to rape or incest victims, or if it is for a woman in danger of dying in labor. However, Planned Parenthood maintains its importance and need for funding based on its targeted aid for women in marginalized socioeconomic groups. Read more on the issue at the New York Times.

California Loses Thousands Of Acres To Rocky Fire, Firefighter Dies In Rescue Mission

Rocky Fire Grows To 23,000 Acres In Drought-Ridden Northern California

54,000 acres of California’s across multiple counties have been blazing from the infamous Rocky Fire that started this weekend. Only 5 percent of the fire has been contained as of Sunday and over 12,100 people have had to be evacuated. Approximately 2,000 fire personnel, 180 engines, four air tankers and 19 helicopters have been on the scene fighting the fire. Read more at CNN.

Memphis Man Wanted For Fatally Shooting Cop At Traffic Stop

Tremaine Wilbourn, 29, is now being hunted by the police after he killed Officer Sean Bolton when Bolton interrupted a drug deal. Bolton had stopped Wilbourn and his accomplic in their car for illegally parking. If Bolton had uncovered the drug transaction that was happening at the time, it would have only been a misdemeanor citation. The driver that was with Wilbourn during the shooting has already turned himself in. Read more at The Root.
